Our Story

A little bit about us.

When Lucy and I married in August 2009, it was the start of a special journey for us. We chose to honeymoon in Canada.

Purely by fortune, we decided to spend a few days in Nelson. As we stepped out of our hire car, a stranger smiled and said a warm hello. He took time to ask where we were from (Eastbourne, in southern England) and to suggest a few terrific places to visit. He also recommended the speciality coffee at Oso Negro Café.

Wow! We never knew coffee could taste that good: sweet, smooth and unforgettably chocolatey. The café seemed to reflect the friendly, enveloping spirit of this wonderful town.

Back home, full of memories of the sun glistening across Kootenay Lake, we went to work on a decision we made that day to open our own speciality coffee shop, beside the sea, in Eastbourne. It took us just a moment to decide that it had to be named after Nelson!

In Nelson’s honour, and with our thanks, we promised that our coffee shop would reflect their spirit. Everyone is made welcome, we source the finest ingredients and work tirelessly to perfect and deliver excellence.

Every day, we raise a cup to Nelson. If a Nelson citizen is ever in England, and finds themselves in Eastbourne, we hope they’ll come in and tell us how we’re doing.

Our Coffee

Nelson Coffee Co. is about two things: make consistently awesome coffee, and create a friendly atmosphere to enjoy it in. We genuinely obsess over making you the best cup of coffee we can, every time. Great coffee, doesn't come easily however. It takes determination, precise measurement and craft from everyone involved, from the farmer at origin to the barista at Nelson Coffee Co. Here’s a bit more information about our coffee’s journey from origin to your cup:

Ben
(Co-Founder)

Coffee obsessive, craft beer fanatic and Liverpool Football Club’s number 9* (*not true). Rightfully described as short in height, spends most of the day fretting over espresso extraction rates. Favourite drink – Long black. 


Lucy
(Co-Founder)

Loves a Flat White in the morning and a Bluebird Tea Co. Strawberry Lemonade tea in the afternoon. Known for huge cheeks and a great New Zealand accent.

Lada
(Supervisor)

Enjoys relaxing after a busy shift at Nelson by mastering the Downward-Facing Tree (it’s a yoga move!) and meditating. If she’s not satisfying her coffee addiction she’s sipping on a BlueBird Tea Co. MojiTea. Favourite drink: single origin filter.




Andrew
(Barista)

Can be heard talking about sport all day long or singing along to Nelson’s awesome tunes. Loves a weekly haircut. Favourite drink – Latte.


Charlie
(Head Barista)

Spends a lot of his spare time adventure seeking on his bicycle. Known to enjoy placing old train tickets in his wheel spokes(?!). Once described as a “clean hipster” (Lucy’s words!). Favourite drink – single origin filter over V60.


Nikki
(Cafe Manager)

Nelson’s known for having the biggest smile. Nikki is a coffee geek and has mad passion for speciality coffee. She spends her free time baking, reading, and brewing more coffee at home. Favourite drink: Iced MojiTea and a single origin filter.
