Q. Who are the people behind Nelson Coffee Roasters?
Nelson Coffee Roasters was co-founded by Ben and Lucy, who share a passion for high-grade specialty coffee. Their journey into coffee began in 2009, during their honeymoon in Nelson, British Columbia, where they discovered a specialty coffee shop that sparked their interest. With 18 years of combined experience in the industry, they’ve since devoted themselves to learning and mastering all aspects of speciality coffee, eventually opening their own café in Eastbourne in 2014.
Q. What makes Nelson Coffee Roasters special?
We source and roast high-grade, specialty and seasonal coffee. In comparison to the commodity coffee typically used for wholesale supply, we can provide you with a sustainable, transparent product. We have done the research into the sourcing the best high grade coffee beans and our roasting process, typically light to medium roast is tailored to highlight the inherent delicious flavour notes that specific coffee beans from different origins possess.
The term speciality coffee is reserved for the highest quality coffee beans, that are meticulously grown, harvester and processed. To be classified as such, the coffee must achieve a quality score 80 when graded on a 100-point scale by a certified coffee taster or a licensed Quality Grader.
At Nelson we go further than this, only working with coffee that has been graded 85 and above.
Simply put, the biggest difference in using our beans in comparison to regular beans, which are often mass-produced, is that ours is a transparent product, which tastes better and full of flavour.
Q. Do you have a range of coffee beans?
Yes, Nelson offers a diverse selection of ethically sourced, high-grade, and seasonal single-origin coffee beans. Our collection includes beans from Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Honduras, Kenya, Nicaragua, and Rwanda, each with their own unique flavour profiles.
We offer various roasts, including espresso and filter, and we always have a decaf option which is currently from Ethiopia.
2023 sees the launch of our first blend, the ‘Bear Blend’, a custom blend that combines a full bodied and sweet Brazilian coffee with a fruity and bright Rwandan coffee that perfectly complement each other, creating a unique flavour.
Q. Do you provide any training or support?
Absolutely, we offer great coffee with tailored barista training, ensuring you can deliver the best possible cup of coffee to highlight the quality of the bean and roasting process.
